Consignment Shops- yes or no?

Today I had my first experience with a consignment shop.  It was interesting.  It isn't the idea of used clothes that bothers me.  But if I'm buying used clothes I want them to be designer.  The reasons for consignment shops are so that people can 1. make some money by selling their used clothes, and 2. purchase gently worn clothes at low prices.

Today I visited "In and Out" or "The Hanger", a month-old consignment shop in Montclair, New Jersey (http://www.the-hanger.com)  Though I wasn't disappointed, it wasn't what I expected, either.  On its website, the shop states that it only accepts designer clothing (read: Jimmy Choo, Burberry, etc.)  This isn't what I found in the store.  Many of the clothing items I picked up were from Old Navy, GAP, and Land's End, all of which are accessible to me on an every day basis and are definitely not on the same level as let's say Dolce & Gabana.  The store had a decent amount of stock, but it wasn't anything I was crazy over.

I've decided I'm going to give the store another month and then go back.  After all, their grand opening was May 28, 2010, and it might take them awhile to get where they want to be.  In the meantime, I'll be visiting Duet Designer Consignment Boutique in Livingston, New Jersey soon.  I've heard great things.  I'll let you know!

  2. Nope- no baby items or maternity items, either. They get new stock every day, though.
